Why is it interesting?
This image of a unique under-hung busbar concept is taken at the 220 kV Drury switching substation outside Auckland, New Zealand.
The substation has been uniquely designed as the country’s model of a state-of-the-art such facility in terms of layout, spacing and safety distances, while also being unusually open and relying on fewer components than similar substations.
There were a lot of ‘firsts’ when it comes to Drury – not only for New Zealand but for the rest of the world as well. These innovations came from a conscious effort by Transpower engineers to look for design improvements based on operating experience. This process then culminated in a revolutionary design, which will now become the model on which future such substations in that country will be built.
